Texas Foam Blowing Agent Substitution

Foam Blowing Agent Substitution

This project provides an opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions beyond regulatory compliance by replacing hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blowing agents with next-generation blowing agents that have near zero global warming potential. Unlike many other voluntary reduction projects that use estimates, these reductions are real and quantifiable. Blowing agents are a key ingredient in the production of foam. Standard blowing agents contain chemicals that release GHGs during manufacturing, use, and end-of-life destruction. Most of the blowing agents currently on the market today are HFCs. HFCs are powerful GHGs when released into the atmosphere—hundreds to thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide. The purpose of our project is to offset the GHG emissions that would be produced by the manufacturing and use of foams with HFC blowing agents, through their replacement with environmentally friendly alternatives. The process has the added benefit of utilizing recycled plastics and reducing utility bills through reduced energy consumption in new builds or retrofits of existing buildings. With decades of experience, 1st Climate Solutions is a trusted partner helping companies meet their environmental goals. Founded in 1982, the organization became an early leader in the emission reduction credit markets by helping companies meet New Source Review compliance standards under The Federal Clean Air Act. Since then, it has broadened its expertise to the voluntary carbon reduction markets, with clients that include some of the top names in the Fortune 500.
