Summer vacations are the perfect time to unwind, explore new destinations, and create lasting memories. But as we plan our getaways, it’s important to remember that travel comes with an environmental impact. From the luggage we choose to the products we pack, every decision we make can contribute to our carbon footprint. This summer, let’s consider not just where we go, but how we travel, making mindful choices that reduce waste, limit pollution, and support a more sustainable future. Even small changes can make a big difference in preserving the beauty of the places we visit for generations to come.

  1. Consider Your Luggage

Your luggage is an investment and long-lasting good. When picking a piece to carry with you on your vacation, choosing a sustainable option can make all the difference in your carbon footprint. Consider utilizing suitcases manufactured with eco-friendly materials. Unfortunately, many luggage brands contain toxic materials in their products like plastics and synthetics, which can harm our health and our environment. Consider the lifespan of your product. With the right care, it should last you for decades. When it's time for disposal, however, your product can have the potential to further pollute the environment. Secondly, after picking the right bag, make sure to pack light. Heavier aircrafts require more fuel to transport its passengers and baggage. Take only what you need to decrease carbon emissions where possible.

  1. Pack Resusables

Single-use waste is a large contributor to travel carbon emissions. Pack a reusable water bottle and fill up where possible to save plastic. Water is a necessity, and we can consume a lot of it while traveling. Secondly, consider a reusable shopping bag. You’ll likely be tempted to purchase souvenirs or go shopping while abroad. Pack your own bag to minimize packaging waste and single-use bags you’ll throw away at the hotel. If you plan on eating takeout or on-the-go, bring your own reusable utensils and food containers and wash them at your accommodation for the next day. All of these items can be lightweight or even collapsible. Consume the extra luggage space to skip out on single-use items.

  1. Bring Your Own Products

Another large contributor to single-waste products is within accommodations. Hotels offer travel sized soaps, toothpaste, shower caps, etc. They accumulate a lot of plastic packaging and wasted leftover product after guests leave. To avoid contributing to the waste, consider packing your own toiletries from home within reusable travel containers. You can be sure to reuse these every vacation and utilize leftover products when you return home. Another product you’ll likely need to pack is sunscreen. While vital for sun protection, researchers have found they often contain chemicals such as oxybenzone and octinoxate which can cause coral bleaching and disrupt reproductive patterns of marine life. If you plan on hitting the beach or swimming in the ocean, consider more sustainable sunscreen options that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Better yet, utilize sunhats and lightweight coverups to further protect you from UV rays and marine life from chemicals.

  1. Shop Responsibly

When going on vacation, your first instinct might be to purchase new outfits, however, you might find that you already have most of what you need in your wardrobe. Don’t contribute to overconsumption by purchasing what isn’t necessary. If you do require new pieces, consider where you’re purchasing from. Look for sustainable companies with certifications such as Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), B Corp, Fair Trade, or Cradle to Cradle. Read the care tags of the pieces you purchase. Choose organic fabrics such as cotton, hemp, bamboo, linen, and wool. Avoid synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, and rayon. Not only will organic fabrics be more durable, but their manufacturing and disposal are less polluting than synthetics. Remember: quality over quantity. Make sure the pieces you pick are ones you’re willing to invest in and wear long after the vacation ends. Vacation clothing shouldn’t be purchased for a single purpose or event and thrown out upon return.

Incorporating sustainability into our summer vacations doesn’t mean sacrificing the joy of travel. It can instead enhance the experience by allowing us to connect with the world in a more meaningful and responsible way. By making conscious choices from selecting durable, eco-friendly luggage to minimizing single-use products and supporting sustainable brands, we can reduce our environmental impact while still enjoying all that vacation has to offer. Every small step counts, and when we travel with sustainability in mind, we not only protect the destinations we love but also ensure that future generations can enjoy the same beauty and wonder. So, as you embark on your next summer adventure, remember that being mindful of your choices while packing can help preserve the planet one trip at a time.
